Teaching Natural Deduction as a Subversive Activity

چکیده
In this paper we argue that sequent proofs systems are a better deductive apparatus for introducing proofs to students than are natural deduction systems. Natural deduction derivations of superintuitionistic theorems (theorems of classical logic that are not intuitionistically valid) require indirect and often obtuse constructions. Constructing derivations in sequent systems is uniform, driven by syntax. The strong claim often made for natural deduction is that derivations closely reflect the logical thought process. We argue here that, for the superintuitionistic theorems, classical sequent derivations also reflect a logical thought process which is more concise and more direct than their natural deduction counterparts.

Gentzen-Prawitz Natural Deduction as a Teaching Tool
We report a four-years experiment in teaching reasoning to undergraduate students, ranging from weak to gifted, using GentzenPrawitz’s style natural deduction. We argue that this pedagogical approach is a good alternative to the use of Boolean algebra for teaching reasoning, especially for computer scientists and formal methods practioners.
متن کاملTeaching natural deduction in the right order with Natural Deduction Planner
We describe a strategy-based approach to teaching natural deduction using a notation that emphasises the order in which deductions are constructed, together with a LATEX package and Java app to aid in the production of teaching resources and classroom demonstrations. Our approach is aimed at students with little exposure to mathematical method and has been developed while teaching undergraduate...
متن کاملFriendly e-tutor for Natural Deduction
Pandora is a tool to support the learning of first order natural deduction. It includes a help window, an interactive context sensitive tutorial known as the “e-tutor” and facilities to save, reload and export to LTEX. Every attempt to apply a natural deduction rule is met with either success or a helpful error message, providing the student with instant feedback. This paper describes the e-tut...
متن کاملTeaching natural deduction to improve text argumentation analysis in engineering students
Teaching engineering students courses such as computer science theory, automata theory and discrete mathematics took us to realize that introducing basic notions of logic, especially following Gentzen’s natural deduction approach [6], to students in their first year, brought a benefit in the ability of those students to recover the structure of the arguments presented in text documents, cartoon...
